What is with the name of this blog? What does w00tpwnage even mean?
w00t is an expression of exuberance or joy.
Pwnage, according to wikipedia, is a slang term that implies domination and/or humiliation of a rival. It sprang from the similar term “owned” and is used primarily in the Internet gaming culture to taunt an opponent that has just been soundly defeated.
So there you have it. w00tpwnage — smashing the competition.
w00tpwnage.com is a blog where you get to be the smasher and decide who wins in the arena. My name is Star Smash (a.k.a. Matt Perella). What will your smasher name be? John Smash? Bill Smash? Great Smash? I don’t know, but I’ll leave that for you to decide.
Five days a week a classic match up will be presented for you to decide who wins and who gets pwned.
Not only that, but you also have the opportunity to submit your own match ups you want to see to be featured on the site. So step into the arena and start smashing the competition.
I’m also looking to add a day of pwned photos so make sure to send those in too!

What’s with these little icons?
These icons that you’ll see near the bottom of posts are links to social bookmarking sites. Places where you can store, organize, search and share all the bookmarks of web pages you find cool or interesting. That way you can share with other people any battles you are really into here on w00tpwnage.
From left to right the social bookmarking site links from this blog are:

That last little icon you see, which you’ll see a bigger version of at the top right of the blog, is an RSS feed subscription button.
What is RSS?
I bet you might be asking yourself what is RSS? You’ve probably heard of it before, but don’t really know what it is. I know that is the way it was for me just a little while ago.
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It is an XML format that was created to syndicate news, and a way to share content on the web. That probably doesn’t mean much to you though, I know it didn’t mean much to me the first time I heard it!
Basically it is a way to track when your favorite sites get updated all in one place. Kind of like getting a magazine subscription that is automatically sent to you every time there is new stuff to check out on your favorite websites. Which is great since it saves you wasted time having to go though checking all your bookmarked sites one by one.
That’s cool, but how does it work?
It is really quick and easy.
1. You get a feed reader. This will allow you to read the feed. There are lots of FREE feed readers out there such as google reader or bloglines.
Then after you’ve installed the feed reader you are just one click away from subscribing to a great site like w00tpwnage (hint, hint, lol) where you’ll get updates when there is something new to checkout. You’ll get a list of headlines and anything you find interesting you can just click on to go to the site and check it out.
2. You subscribe by clinking on that orange icon you see at the top right on this site. (Sometimes it will be a different size, just text, or in a different place depending on the site. There are also a few different looking rss icons. I have the basic one on here.)
That’s it!
Then if you find you’re not interested in one of your subscriptions anymore you can cancel it just as easily.

The beer mug icon you see below lets you “Buy Me A Beer” because you like my site, the content and your fellow smashers. Basically it is a paypal donation to help me pay for bandwidth and to help me cover the high cost of my student loans.
I don’t know whether or not you can imagine yourself having to make a large loan payment every month you really can’t afford and all the stress that comes with. Now if you can and like what I’m trying to do here Buy Me A Beer (suggested $3 or a pitcher for $8) and hopefully w00tpwnage will be around for a long time. I hope to make this site as much yours as it is mine. Thanks!
